Happy New Year 2010; About New Year

The New Year is the day that marks the end of one year and the beginning of the next year, and is the day on which the year count is incremented. In many cultures, the event is celebrated in some manner. In countries which use the Gregorian calendar, New Year is usually celebrated on January 1.

Traditionally, the Roman calendar began the first day of March. However, it was in January (the eleventh month) when the consuls of ancient Rome assumed the government. Julius Caesar, in 47 BC, changed the system, creating the Julian calendar. It was modified in the time of Mark Antony consul in 44 BC, again by the emperor Augustus Caesar in 8 BC and finally by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, which brought the calendar to its present day form. This year begins on January 1. Subsequently, this day was marked with a religious significance during the Middle Ages and later centuries.

With the expansion of Western culture to the rest of the world during the twentieth century, the January 1 date became universal in nature, even in countries with their own New Year celebrations (e.g., China and India).

At present, the celebration of New Year is a major celebration worldwide. Many large-scale events are held in major cities around the world New Year's Eve (December 31), being accompanied by the largest fireworks events.

Sydney launched over 80,000 fireworks at midnight, and had more than one and a half million attendees; it was also the most-watched event on television worldwide last year.[2009] In Valparaiso upwards of two million visitors witnessed the largest fireworks in a natural setting; a total of more than 21 kilometers of fireworks on the bay, from the commercial port city of Valparaiso to Concon, Chile, all in 25 minutes of entertainment. In New York, the celebration is focused around a large crystal ball that descends in a ten second countdown in Times Square; 2008 was the party with the largest number of attendees - more than three million people. Edinburgh plays host to one of the world's largest Hogmanay events. Celebrations last for four days and attracts visitors from around the globe to take part in the street parties, and attend concerts.

In the culture of Latin America there is a variety of traditions and superstitions for these dates as omens for the coming year. January still remains a symbol of New Year's celebration.

According to the Christian tradition, on January 1 coincides with the circumcision of Christ (eight days after birth), when the name of Jesus (Luke (II: 21)).

1 January: The first official day of the year in the Gregorian calendar used by most countries. Eight of the twelve biggest Eastern Orthodox Churches which have adopted the Revised Julian calendar - Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Romania, Syria and Turkey - also celebrate 1 January as the New Year.

New Year in France is one of the most traditional and oldest celebrations, but in fact they do not have any "rule" as on what to wear. New year in France is also known as Jour des Étrennes. This celebration starts on January 1 when the people start wishing each other Bonne Annees, which is the same as happy new year, and ends at January 6. They have a great show with fire works shot near the Eiffel tower. French people call New Year's Eve la Saint-Sylvestre. On this day they have a special feast called le Réveillon de Saint-Sylvestre in which they have nice dishes like pancakes and flavoured duck or goose. They drink champagne, a white sparkling wine produced in the Champagne Region of France. They also drink Vin chaud (hot wine), but sparkling cider is also common. They also have a festival cake called galette des rois which has sometimes a little king figure baked inside. They believe, like several other countries, that this nice dinner brings a nice year to the family.

The Tamil Nadu Tamil New Year (Declaration Bill 2008) was introduced in the House by the Tamil Nadu DMK Government on January 29, 2008. According to the statement of objects and reasons of the Tamil Nadu Tamil New Year (Declaration) Act 2008, the Governor in his address to the House had announced that in view of the consensus amongst some Tamil scholars that the first day of the month of Thai is the first day of the Tamil year, the Government had decided to declare the first day of Thai as the Tamil Nadu Tamil New Year Day. This legislative enactment of the DMK government was not without controversy. It abolished the Tamil calendar for purportedly secular reasons and reaffirmed the use of the Tiruvalluvar era created in the 20th century as the official calendar. The order abolishes the use of traditional Tamil Years in the 60 year cycle. It proposes that January 14 of every year be celebrated as Tamil New Year in addition to the famous harvest/farmer festival Pongal. But the said resolution has been met with resistance.and has been challenged in court. The opposition AIADMK and MDMK in Tamil Nadu condemned the decision of the DMK Government in that state and urged their supporters to continue celebrating the traditional date in mid-April. Tamils in Sri Lanka and in other diaspora communities worldwide continue to observe the new year in mid-April. as they are outside of the jurisdiction of the Tamil Nadu State of India.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the civil New Year falls on Gregorian 14 January (1 January in the Julian calendar). Many in the countries where Eastern Orthodoxy predominates celebrate both the Gregorian and Julian New Year holidays, with the Gregorian day celebrated as a civic holiday, and the Julian date as the "Old New Year", a religious holiday. The orthodox churches of Georgia, Jerusalem, Russia, the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia still use the Julian Calendar.

The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, occurs every year on the new moon of the first lunar month, about four to eight weeks before spring (Lichun). The exact date can fall anytime between 21 January and 21 February (inclusive) of the Gregorian Calendar.

Traditionally, years were marked by one of twelve Earthly Branches, represented by an animal, and one of ten Heavenly Stems, which correspond to the five elements. This combination cycles every 60 years. It is the most important Chinese celebration of the year.

The Vietnamese New Year is the Tết Nguyên Đán which is for most times the same day as the Chinese New Year.

The Tibetan New Year is Losar and falls from January through March.

Because of the division of the globe into time zones, the new year moves progressively around the globe as the start of the day ushers in the New Year. The first time zone to usher in the New Year is just west of the International Date Line. At that time the time zone to the east of the Date Line is 23 hours behind, still in the previous day. The central Pacific Ocean island nation of Kiribati claims that its easternmost landmass, uninhabited Caroline Island, is the first to usher in the New Year.

Google Phone costs $530

San Francisco: A day after Google announced a media event for its Android mobile phone system next week, new details leaked out Wednesday about the first ever phone to be sold directly by the web search giant.

According to technology blog Gizmodo the Nexus One will be sold unlocked on a Google website for $530. The phone will work on GSM cellphone networks and will be offered at a subsidised price of $180 in the US by fourth-ranked carrier T-Mobile with a two-year talk and data contract costing $80 a month.

Google launched its Android operating system for cellphones in October 2008 and it is fast emerging as the most competitive rival to Apple's iPhone. Manufacturers as diverse as HTC, Motorola and Samsung have based phones on Google's open source software, but the Nexus One will be the first device to be branded and sold directly by Google.

Google is expected to officially announce the phone's release at a media event Jan 5, and make the device available to customers on the same day.

Cybercriminals targets Facebook & twitter

Bangalore: McAfee unveiled its 2010 Threat Predictions report in which it believes cybercriminals will target social networking sites and third-party applications, use more complex Trojans and botnets to build and execute attacks, and take advantage of HTML 5 to create emerging threats. McAfee Labs also predicts 2010 will be a good year for law enforcement's fight against cybercrime.

"Over the past decade, we've seen a tremendous improvement in the ability to successfully monitor, uncover, and stop cybercrime" said Jeff Green, senior vice president of McAfee Labs.

"We're now facing emerging threats from the explosive growth of social networking sites, the exploitation of popular applications and more advanced techniques used by cybercriminals, but we're confident that 2010 will be a successful year for the cybersecurity community."
McAfee labs threat predictions for 2010:

Social Networks will be platform of choice for emerging threats:
Facebook, Twitter, and third-party applications on these sites are rapidly changing the criminal toolkit, giving cybercriminals new technologies to work with and hot spots of activity that can be exploited. Users will become more vulnerable to attacks that blindly distribute rogue apps across their networks, and cybercriminals will take advantage of friends trusting friends to get users to click on links they might otherwise treat cautiously. The use of abbreviated URLs on sites like Twitter make it even easier for cybercriminals to mask and direct users to malicious Web sites. McAfee Labs predicts that cybercriminals will increasingly use these tactics across the most popular social networking sites in 2010.

Web evolution will give cybercriminals new opportunities to write malware:
The release of Google Chrome OS and the technological advancements of HTML 5 will continue to shift user activity from desktop to online applications, creating yet another opportunity for malware writers to prey on users. HTML 5's anticipated cross-platform support also provides an additional motivation for attackers, enabling them to reach users of many mainstream browsers.

Banking Trojans, email attachments delivering malware will rise in volume, sophistication:
McAfee Labs warns that banking Trojans, having demonstrated new tactics in 2009, will become even more sophisticated in 2010 and easily get around current protections used by banks. New techniques include a Trojan's ability to silently interrupt a legitimate transaction to make an unauthorized withdrawal and simultaneously check the user's transaction limits to stay below them and avoid alerting the bank. Email attachments, a longstanding delivery method for malware, will continue to rise in volume and increasingly target corporations, journalists, and individual users.

Cybercriminals continue to target Adobe Reader, Flash:
In 2009, McAfee Labs saw an increase in attacks targeting client software. Due to the growing popularity of Adobe applications, McAfee Labs expects that cybercriminals will continue to target Adobe products, primarily Acrobat Reader and Flash, two of the most widely deployed applications in the world. McAfee Labs expects Adobe product exploitation will likely surpass that of Microsoft Office applications in 2010.

Botnet infrastructure shifts from Centralized Model to Peer-to-Peer control:
Botnets, the versatile infrastructure that launches nearly every type of cyberattack from spamming to identity theft, will continue to use a seemingly infinite supply of stolen computing power and bandwidth around the globe. Following a number of successful botnet takedowns, including the McColo ISP, botnet controllers must adjust to the increasing pressure cybersecurity professionals are placing on them. In 2010, McAfee Labs expects to see a significant adoption of peer-to-peer control, a distributed and resilient botnet infrastructure, rather than the centralized hosting model that we see today. For cybercriminals, the benefits will finally outweigh the costs of the peer-to-peer model, due to the security community's increasingly aggressive attempts to shut down and deny access to botnets.

Cybercrime: A good year for law enforcement:
Next year marks a decade in the fight that international law enforcement agencies have undertaken against cybercrime. McAfee Labs has seen significant progress in the universal effort to identify, track, and combat cybercrime by governments worldwide. McAfee believes that in 2010 we'll see many more successes in the pursuit of cybercriminals.

Airtel is close to acquiring stake in Warid Telecom

Dhaka: Indian telecom firm Bharti Airtel is close to acquiring a majority stake in the Bangladesh operations of Warid Telecom, with officials of both companies meeting key officials to wrap up the deal, a newspaper report said Wednesday.

The Indian company is looking at buying a 70 percent stake in Warid and has received a favourable response from the Bangladeshi firm's promoters -- the Abu Dhabi group -- who are here to thrash out the deal.

"A memorandum of understanding (MoU) could be signed between the companies during the visit," The Daily Star newspaper quoted a Warid Telecom official as saying.

The MoU is the primary step before signing the final deal between the companies to share confidential business strategies.

In a related development, chairman and group chief executive officer of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Bharti Mittal called on Bangladesh telecom minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju at his office Tuesday.

Both Bharti Airtel and the Abu Dhabi group, which has diversified business interests in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Uganda, Congo and West Asia, have sought the approval of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the country's sectoral watchdog.

BTRC has asked for some details from the companies such as Airtel's investment plans in Bangladesh, and the approvals of the two companies' board of directors.

BTRC also asked the two firms to clarify how Warid Telecom would clear its liabilities, including bank loans, after the stake sale.

"BTRC has asked the companies to submit these documents before signing the deal," said The Daily Star quoting the commission chairman Zia Ahmed.

Bharti Airtel has placed a $300-million initial investment plan to BTRC, which will be implemented after signing the deal.

According to The Daily Star, Bangladesh telecom secretary Sunil Kanti Bosh has confirmed that Airtel would invest in Bangladesh.

Bosh said the company wanted to develop the voice market in Bangladesh and planned to provide telecom services between that country and India at affordable rates.

SingTel, Vodafone and Etisalat have also approached Warid to form a partnership in Bangladesh.

Incidentally, another Indian telecom operator, Essar Group, acquired a majority share in Warid's operations in Uganda and Congo for $318 million.

Warid entered Bangladesh as its sixth mobile operator in May 2007 and has 2.79 million subscribers.

Quit smoking and get a 10% hike in basic pay

Bangalore: Quit smoking and get a 10 percent hike in basic pay. That is the offer made by the head of a Bangalore based firm to coax his colleagues to quit smoking in 2010, reports Debi Prasad Sarangi of Bangalore Mirror.

"The idea is to ensure that employees adopt a healthy lifestyle," says A C Ramesh, CEO, Focus Engineering Services, who plans to lead by example. Ramesh has been a smoker for the last 25 years and plans to quit the bad habit, which, he thinks, would have some positive impact on his colleagues.

Focus has close to 40 employees and its clients include the Confident Group, Embassy Group and ISRO. According to Ramesh, 50 percent of his colleagues are chain-smokers. Concerns about his and their health prompted Ramesh to come up with this idea. "I have had enough of smoking and drinking for the last 25 years. Now, I want to put an end to these vices for the sake of my health and that of my family. Suddenly, I thought of getting my colleagues also to do the same, but realized that concern for their health alone won't motivate all of them. I expect the 10 percent bonus, in addition to the regular hike, to do the trick. And, if my men are in good health, my company will also be in good health."

Ramesh's colleagues are already banned from smoking when they are in a client's office or premises. But, there is a rider. "Anyone violating the pact faces a 20 percent pay cut," says Ramesh. "I was planning to introduce the bonus for those who quit both smoking and drinking. But, after discussions with senior colleagues, I decided to start with smoking. A packet of cigarettes costs about Rs. 40 and is within the reach of most people, and, hence, has far-reaching consequences. Any person can smoke 10 cigarettes every day."

Karthik Anand, a Project Engineer in Focus said, "I would definitely quit smoking. If my boss can do it, why can't I? This will only help me in the future. I have been smoking for last 15 years. Earlier, I used to smoke three packets, but of late have cut down to one pack."

Dust Bin for Electronic Wastage

Bangalore: Gone are the days, when people used to go miles to dispose e-waste or throw at streets. Now, with the help of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Ash recyclers, started by Sayeed Hussain have reached many residents in the city to collect e-waste. The organization installed bins in front of the apartments. Residents dump their waste in these bins, which are then carried to their office on Thimmaiah Road. E-wastes include a wide range of things from computer equipment refrigerators, emergency lights to other household products.

Hussain says that majority of the residents don't even claim money in exchange of their e-waste. Many of the software companies sell their e-waste at Rs.8 per kg. Every month, around 1500 kg of wastes are collected from offices and residents.

Employees working at the centre are mainly women who are poverty ridden. More than 30 trained women deal with the disassembling and packaging of the various elements present in these electronic items. The organization also take care of these employees by having the recognized methodology to extract the hazardous chemicals like iron, silicon, lead and nickel that is generated as part of e-waste. After extraction these equipment are stocked at their office in Hosakote till they are sold to the consumers. The end product is then sold at reasonable price to people who cannot afford to buy it at the price of a first hand product.

Not only collecting e-waste, Ash Recyclers also associated with a trust called 'Masha Allah', engaging itself with various activities like donation of computers to schools with an agreement that the computers will be returned back after the end of their life for recycling purposes.

Review of the major technology developments

San Francisco: Any review of the major technology developments of 2009 would inevitably include copious copy on the Googles, Microsofts and other giants of the tech world.

But it was also a year in which the tiny company called Twitter became a major communications force, and when political, economic, social and technological trends combined to put green technology at the forefront of innovation.

2009 was the year when the microblogging site Twitter became the de-rigueur mode of communication for any artist, politician or celebrity who wished to display a cutting edge sense of connectivity. But it also became an essential mode of communication for everyone from grandmas to schoolgirls, from company spokesman to revolutionary ideologues.

The uprising against the election results in Iran in June gave the most concrete indication to date of the power of Twitter to influence world events. As the Iranian government clamped down on other media and internet channels, Iranians kept taking to the streets and transmitting their experiences via the microblogging site, helping their leaders organise demonstrations, and sympathisers around the world keep track of their struggle.

The technology allows users to post instant and frequent updates via their mobile phones, and grew exponentially this year to an estimated 18 million users a month - a 200 percent increase over the year before.

With the continued proliferation of the iPhone and its would-be competitors, Twitterers and others certainly had a huge variety of devices to choose from.

Though Apple's iconic device remains the undisputed king of the sector, 2009 saw the emergence of its first credible challengers. This was largely due to the emergence of Google's Android operating system, which was adopted as a mobile platform by a growing band of device manufacturers, notably Taiwanese maker HTC, and Motorola, a once-dominant handset maker which is banking its future on Android.

Though the global recession cut into Google's amazing growth spurt and even prompted it to announce its first firings and cost-cutting initiatives, Google still dominated the internet search market throughout the year. It still registers some 60 percent of all U.S. searches, but now, when the company executives look in their rear view mirror, they might notice the tiny image of a distant giant approaching.

After years in which Microsoft botched every attempt to build on the dominance of its Internet Explorer browser, the Seattle software giant has finally got something right with its Bing search engine. The company's heavily-promoted new technology has been warmly reviewed and has grabbed a 10 percent market share since its launch. Microsoft's agreement to provide Yahoo with its search technology and its discussions with news providers for exclusive contracts could yet make it a formidable Google competitor.

Microsoft also finally got it right with the release of its Windows 7 operating system less than four years after it launched the widely-derided Vista. According to Microsoft, the new software has sold more than twice as many copies as Vista did during its initial launch period. The October release also helped pump up computer sales for the crucial holiday season.

But perhaps the biggest technology story of the year revolves not around the latest computing innovations but on the ever-increasing focus placed on the development of clean green technology. According to tracking firm CleanTech Ventures, U.S. clean technology venture investments totalled $1.59 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2009 for the second consecutive quarterly rise after steep declines prompted by the global recession.

Green industry got an added boost from the U.S. government this year under U.S. President Barack Obama's stimulus programme, which set aside nearly 10 percent or $70 billion for energy efficiency and new methods.

Huge investments have been made from outside the venture and government scene. ExxonMobil for instance has pumped $600 million into a San Diego-based scheme to develop fuel from algae, while two California-based companies have received almost $1 billion in government awards to develop electric cars.

Private investors were also eager to open their wallets as they sought to take advantage of low share prices for emerging technology firms. But while 2009 was a year of recovery for green technology, 2010 is likely to see a return to significant growth as high oil prices and the focus on a low-carbon economy continue to fuel interest in alternative energy.

Hackers can listen your phone calls

Berlin: A German computer engineer, Karsten Nohl has deciphered the code used to encrypt most of the world's digital mobile phone calls and published it saying it was his attempt to expose weaknesses in the security of global wireless systems. He announced this in front of around 600 attendees at the Chaos Communication Congress, a four-day conference of computer hackers that takes place in Berlin, according to New York Times.

Nohl said that he has published the information to public to demonstrate effectiveness of the 21-year-old GSM (global system for mobile communication) algorithm, a code developed in 1988 and still used to protect the privacy of 80 percent of mobile calls worldwide. "This shows that existing GSM security is inadequate. We are trying to push operators to adopt better security measures for mobile phone calls," said Nohl.

The GSM Association, the industry group based in London that devised the algorithm and represents wireless companies, called these efforts illegal and said they overstated the security threat to wireless calls. "This is theoretically possible but practically unlikely," said Claire Cranton, an Association spokeswoman. She said no one else had broken the code since its adoption. "What he is doing would be illegal in Britain and the United States. To do this while supposedly being concerned about privacy is beyond me."

But there are many security experts who are supporting Nohl in his efforts. "Organizations must now take this threat seriously and assume that within six months their organizations will be at risk unless they have adequate measures in place to secure their mobile phone calls," said Stan Schatt, Vice President for Health Care and Security at the technology market researcher ABI Research in New York.

GSM is the most widely used wireless-communications standard in the world. About 3.5 billion of the world's 4.3 billion wireless connections use GSM. In 2007, the GSM Association developed a 128-bit successor to the A5/1, called the A5/3 encryption algorithm, but most network operators have not yet invested to make the security upgrade.

Many have raised questions about the legal aspect of this effort but Nohl said he took precautions to remain within legal boundaries, emphasizing that his efforts to crack the GSM algorithm were purely academic, kept within the public domain, and that the information was not used to decipher a digital call. "We are not recommending people use this information to break the law," Nohl said. "What we are doing is trying to goad the world's wireless operators to use better security."

Nohl has made the Algorithm code book available on Bit Torrent but denied to provide a weblink fearing legal complications.

In a statement, the GSM Association said efforts to crack the algorithm were more complex than critics have asserted, and that operators, by simply modifying the existing algorithm, could thwart any unintended surveillance. The group said that hackers intent on illegal eavesdropping would need a radio receiver system and signal processing software to process raw radio data, much of which is copyrighted.

But Nohl said the hardware and software needed for digital surveillance were available free as an open-source product in which the coding is available for individuals to tailor to their needs.

Simon Bransfield-Garth, the Chief Executive of Cellcrypt, a company based in London that sells software, said Nohl's efforts could put sophisticated mobile interception technology - limited to governments and intelligence agencies - within the reach of any reasonable well-funded criminal organization. "This will reduce the time to break a GSM call from weeks to hours," Bransfield-Garth said during an interview. "We expect as this further develops it will be reduced to minutes."

U.S. employers to hire more people in 2010

New York: With one-fifth of the U.S. employers planning to hire full-time permanent employees next year, up from 14 percent in 2009, it is a sign that the U.S. recession may be easing its grip on the market.

"There's definitely an uptick. The number of employers who say that they're going to add full-time workers is up from last year, and that is very good news," Michael Erwin, Senior Career Advisor at CareerBuilder told Reuters. According to the survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com, an online jobs site, just nine percent said that they plan to cut head count in 2010, down from 16 percent in 2009. The survey includes 2,700 hiring managers and human resource professionals.

Yet 61 percent of employers said they do not plan to change staffing levels, showing a degree of caution, Erwin said. "Employers are waiting to see what the economy does and what the new year brings," he said. One-third of employers plan to add technology jobs, while 28 percent said they would add customer service jobs and 23 percent said they planned to increase their sales force.

"Now it's really about growth so I think you're going to see customer service jobs added, sales jobs added. Those are really what can grow the business and make the money come back and get the customers back," Erwin said. Salaries and benefits are likely to stay tight, the research found.

57 percent of employers expect to see higher salaries for existing employees in 2010, down from 65 percent in 2009. Also, 29 percent plan to increase salaries in offers to new employees, down from 33 percent in 2009. As to bonuses, medical coverage and matching 401k contributions, the survey found 37 percent of employers plan to cut benefits in 2010, up from 32 percent who trimmed in 2009.

About 37 percent of employers said that they plan to take advantage of the large labor pool and replace low-performing employees in 2010.

Windows 7 at Work Place!

Bangalore: The release of Windows 7 has definitely helped in increasing the sales of the PC at work, but have failed to slow the increase in adoption of Macs at the workplace, according to a study. Apple is expected to grow at the same time, while the number of companies buying Mac desktops remains flat at about seven percent, the number of those buying MacBooks has grown by 10 percent, according to Electronista.

The ChangeWave study also reports that Dell and HP should benefit from a slight increase in corporate sales with a respective 33 percent and 18 percent companies planning to buy both desktops and notebooks from the two. Also, 93 percent of those who had tried Windows 7 were either somewhat or very satisfied with the OS, that hasn't translated into significant decisions to move up upgrades at the office. But only 19 percent plan any sort of change, and only three percent plan a "significant" change to get Windows 7 into their businesses early.

It's not known what's leading to Apple's increase, though native Exchange 2007 support in Snow Leopard may contribute to the results along with overall less expensive MacBooks and MacBook Pros from the past few months.

Microsoft is passed by Apple, Facebook & Google

Bangalore: Don Dodge, a Google employee and former executive of Microsoft says that Microsoft is no longer fast or innovative and is now what IBM was in 1985. He further says that Microsoft is now passed by other companies like Apple, Facebook and Google. But he still feels that Microsoft has an advantage in some areas, particularly development and software, but it now has major competitors in most areas and in some cases has been eclipsed, according to Electronista.

"Very few companies can dominate an industry for more than 20 years," Dodge explains to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "It is just the natural competitive cycle." He adds that having the company founders active and in charge is important to the company dynamic and that Microsoft has lost this with Paul Allen and more recently Bill Gates having left their daily roles. Google is helped by Larry Page and Sergey Brin still working at the company, while Steve Jobs continues to helm Apple.

Dodge says that Microsoft has had its own share of failures in the form of Windows Mobile and Windows Vista. Windows Mobile has not been able to be a tough competition for Apple's iPhone and Google's Android.

Dodge predicts that Microsoft will face trouble in other areas and in 2010 is likely to lose many traditional Office customers to web-based Google technologies like Gmail and Google Apps as they decide to use the cheaper, more frequently updated web tools in place of costly offline software.

Mac cloning tool suspended

Bangalore: Psystar has indefinitely suspended sales of its Mac Cloning tool, which helped customers in installing Apple's Snow Leopard operating system (OS) on generic Intel-based computers. The company has decided that it will now resume selling the system soon but would now run on Linux rather than Mac OS.

Psystar, which began selling Mac clones in April 2008, has been battling Apple in federal court in California since July 2008, when Apple sued the firm, saying it violated copyright laws by preinstalling the Mac operating system on its machines, according to Computer World. The company has suspended the sale of Rebel EFI, which was launched in October as it is still awaiting the court's decision.

Rebel EFI has been Psystar's only product since early December, when the company halted sales of all hardware, including the Intel-based clones pre-loaded with Snow Leopard, and agreed to pay Apple approximately $2.7 million if it loses planned appeals of a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup.

Although Psystar took Alsup's warning seriously enough to pull Rebel EFI, it continued to trumpet its right to sell the utility. "We respectfully disagree with courts (sic) notion that we are 'hardcore copyright infringers,'" said Psystar on its Web site. "Psystar has never, and will never, condone software piracy. It's your software, you should be able to use it where you want to."

Apple, however, has argued in the Florida federal court of U.S. District Court Judge William Hoeveler that Rebel EFI is "simply a repackaged version of Psystar's circumvention technology" that has been barred by Alsup. Apple has asked Hoeveler to transfer the Florida lawsuit to Alsup's court.

Not surprisingly, Psystar sees things differently. "If you purchase an off-the-shelf copy of OS X Snow Leopard, its your right to use that software," said Psystar. "A publisher cannot forbid you from reading a book in the bathroom or listening to a music disc while riding your bicycle. There should be no difference in the software realm, no matter how much money Apple or anyone else throws at it."

The new computers will be aimed at customers who want to install Snow Leopard rather than actually use Linux. "In addition to using only first quality components, our hardware specifically chosen such that it is known to be compatible with OS X (via Apples [sic] own drivers or open source offerings online)," said Psystar. "This makes it easier to get up and running with your favorite XNU based operating system, including Pure Darwin."

Last week's statement was the clearest indication yet that Psystar, which once told potential investors it could sell as many as 12 million machines in 2011, will rely on Rebel EFI to drive any future business. By selling Linux PCs and Rebel EFI to customers, Psystar would shift responsibility for installing Mac OS X to its users.

Indian workers facing abuse in Dubai

Dubai: Many workers as well as salaried staff in senior positions in Dubai are claiming abuse when they try to change their jobs, as they are often forced by companies to give up their service benefits to get a no-objection certificate (NOC) when doing so. The revelations came in a series of interviews to The National.

"There are too many complications to change jobs here," said SN, a Purchase Executive at a construction firm in Dubai who wished to remain anonymous. He gave up a good offer at another firm because he was afraid of losing benefits for years of service. "It is so difficult to get a good job break in the present situation. I wanted to take the new job, but when I found out about all the formalities and troubles to get my benefits, I decided to stay back. I have a wife, children and several credit cards to pay up. I can't risk this."

He also said that his company demands at least two months salary from employees in return for a no objection certificate, which he claims is common practice, especially in construction firms.

According to The National, the staff has to sign on a letter stating that all their pending salary has been cleared, after which they cannot demand anything. The NOC from the employer is required to avoid a work ban when shifting jobs. The Ministry of Labor has said that any agreement in which a worker gives up service benefits or salary is not valid.

The Ministry also maintained that these are employee rights and should be given by companies. But, laborers in the construction industry claim that they know several of their colleagues who have had to return home empty handed.

"Since the recession began, many people went home without getting any money," said a worker based in Sharjah. "We even have to pay for our own tickets." Additionally, workers wanting to return to their home countries have been asked to either pay for their own ticket or wait until the firm can afford to pay for a ticket.

Although the Ministry has urged workers to file complaints against employers who use these tactics, many are hesitant to enter a process that can leave them in an even worse position.

India has lost thousands of jobs to the Philippines

New Delhi: For about a decade, it was India's call centre boom, that defined it as the 'world's back office', much like neighboring China, which has been immortalized as the 'world's factory.' However the situation seems to be changing, as Philippines is fast upstaging India's back office supremacy, with BPO service providers and customers seeming to favor this country as a better place for 'voice-related' work, reports Economic Times.

"India has lost tens of thousands of jobs to the Philippines. The caliber of English is better and companies don't have to put up with the mess (that exists in India) there," says Pramod Bhasin, President and CEO of Genpact.

Some of the major hassles that India poses, include arranging transport for employees, security, power back-up in offices, and basic infrastructure that firms can take for granted in the Philippines. The country has become a preferred destination, especially with the U.S. companies, many of which are more comfortable with the English accent spoken there. U.S. customers account for over 50 percent of the global outsourcing business.

Ananda Mukherji, MD and CEO of BPO provider Firstsource Solutions, says that costs are more or less similar in both countries. This means the accent proficiency in the Philippines tips the scales in its favor.

According to the Economic Times, many of the Philippines' advantages are due to the U.S. rule, which bequeathed the English language to that country with its distinct accent along with a robust telecom and broadband network laid out by the U.S. defense forces.

Prabhakar Bisen, Head of the Philippines operations of WNS says, "Apart from affinity to the U.S. culture and English-speaking skills, the country's time zone advantages make the Philippines a natural choice for providing 24x7 service to global companies, particularly those based in the U.S."

Genpact, Wipro BPO, Intelenet, Aegis BPO and Firstsource are all ramping up their operations in Philippines. Genpact has about 2,000 employees there and expects to scale up operations by 40-50 percent in the next 12 months. Firstsource has about 500 staff in Manila, while WNS has increased staffing to 1,100 from 200 in the past 18 months, providing a mix of voice and back-office services for telecom, consumer products, travel and financial services clients.

In the past 12 months, Wipro BPO has set up a 1,000 seat centre in the Philippines' Cebu City, with staff there engaged in telecom, healthcare, energy and utilities-related tasks.

Aamir Khan created a account on Facebook

New Delhi: Aamir Khan created a secret identity on Facebook to promote his new movie "3 Idiots". Megastar Amitabh Bachchan's "Paa" also found a major presence on the internet through his blog and his Facebook fan page.

3 Idiots Movie Review & Rating

Move over TV, radio and print. Social networking sites (SNS), with their interactive and cost-effective features, are here as an ideal medium to promote movies. "Internet's role in the promotion of music and films has been highly visible in recent years and it has grown significantly," according to Rahul Sharma, vice president, Brand Solutions, ibibo.com.

Bachchan, for instance, had a promotional application tool specially created on ibibo.com inviting people to share their stories of father-son relationships even as "Paa" hit the theatres.

"Online promotion of the music album or film encourages new fans and gives a lot of free publicity. It certainly drives the overall sales volume of the product. In addition, it allows them to reach a massive audience," Sharma told IANS.

Nabeel Abbas, CEO of movie marketing firm Epigram, says the internet has gained importance in the last two years as far as film promotion is concerned.

"One can create a discussion forum on the internet as opposed to other forms of marketing where the information is open to only being seen and consumed. The interactivity factor on the internet leads to exponential popularity for a film," said Abbas.

Filmmakers are leveraging the opportunity with fan pages on websites like Facebook, Orkut and Twitter, blogs, by building special official websites as well as by tying up with networking sites like Zapak and Ibibo, which offer various customised applications and games related to a movie.

Gaming portal Zapak.com has tied up with "3 Idiots" and is offering content in line with the movie that primarily targets the youth.

Their website - www.idiotsacademy.com - takes the user to different rooms of Idiots Academy like the director's office, lab, hostel, canteen, class room and also the toilets. Each room on the site offers interactive applications based on the movie.

"Internet and mobile are increasingly becoming preferred destinations for youth. With over 50 percent of India below the age of 25 years, I believe it is imperative for movies to have a strong and concerted digital strategy," said Aamir.

The proposition also turns out to be highly cost-effective for filmmakers.

"If a print campaign costs anywhere between Rs.1 million and Rs.4 million, an average TV campaign could cost no less than a Rs.10 million and a very good TV campaign could be even Rs.40 million, depending on a producer's budget.

"Whereas an internet-based campaign costs almost 10 percent of a TV campaign and offers the added advantage of interactivity," explained Abbas, who recently promoted "Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year" on the digital platform.

Agrees Vishal Chinchankar, assistant vice president, Media, Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

"SNS is a platform that offers the users' point of view. It helps build a brand community compared to other platforms. It's also one of the most cost- effective channels that offers a reach of around 23.5 million active SNS population (figure according to Sept: comScore report)," Chichankar told IANS.

The cast and crew also take initiative to promote films through their personal blogs and profiles on SNS.

Debut director Shawn Arranha sends regular updates about his film "Hide & Seek" to his Facebook followers, while Bachchan often discusses his film projects and tidbits about their making on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.

So do Aamir, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, actress Shilpa Shetty and actor Akshay Kumar. Other actors like Priyanka Chopra, Uday Chopra, Mallika Sherawat and Preity Zinta use their Twitter pages to keep their fans updated about their films and other engagements.

Ministers and their families can travel in Air for free

New Delhi: Indian government is taking various austerity measures but there is one particular bill which has been cleared without any debate - The Salaries and Allowances of Ministers (Amendment) Bill, 2009. This bill allows ministers to take along "any number of companions or relatives" for air travel, not exceeding 48 trips a year. Among those eligible to travel along with a minister are the spouse, wholly dependent legitimate children, step-children, doctors and nursing staff, according to DNA.

The bill provides that the spouse or legitimate children or step-children residing with and wholly dependent on a minister may undertake such air travel alone. The bill was approved by the Rajya Sabha without discussion. Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan said it was agreed similarly in the business advisory committee.

The Lok Sabha, too, had passed the bill without debate on December 18. The bill proposes to end the discrepancy between ministers and members of Parliament.

Laptop for child at 100$ (4700 Indian Rupees)

Bangalore: One Laptop per Child (OLPC) has revealed the design for its latest computer aimed at connecting children in the developing world. This laptop will be available by 2012 and would cost well below $100, OLPC said. This laptop is named as XO-3 and is a slim-line touchscreen tablet PC, according to BBC.

The XO-3 will eventually replace the original XO laptop that first went into production in 2007. The new design replaces the proposed XO-2, a foldable e-book that was first shown off in 2008 but has since been scrapped by the organization. The innovative machines, which have been designed for use in remote and harsh environments, were designed for use by school children and featured a sunlight readable display and open source software.

OLPC originally aimed to sell the low-cost laptops in lots of one million to governments in developing countries for $100 each. However, the non-profit organization had difficulty getting governments to commit to bulk orders. The machines - which are able to run both Linux and Microsoft Windows - are now offered in single units and cost around $200. So far the XO has been distributed to more than 1.4 million children in 35 countries.

The high-price has not however put off all governments. Uruguay has bought a computer for every one of their school children. Walter de Brouwer, CEO of OLPC Europe said that these "saturation projects" were the future of the organisation both in the developed and the developing world. "I'm talking to three four countries in the EU at the moment," he told BBC News. "Once one says yes, the others can't say no." The organisation believes the new design will cost significantly less.

Brouwer said that due to the decreasing prices of electronic equipment, he can imagine the laptop being sold for as less as 50, 60 or 70 euros.

The concept laptop shows a touchscreen, a camera, induction charger, and a carrying ring on one of its corners. The laptop would include a chip from UK firm ARM. The XO 1.75 is set for launch in 2011. The 1.75 will merge elements of the current machines with technologies - such as a touchscreen - intended to be included in the XO-3.

OLPC recently said that the organization would just focus on promoting its concepts and educational aims, rather than manufacturing laptops. "We are not a laptop company," said Brouwer. "Manufacturing a laptop is not such a big deal. The bigger appeal for us is deploying them and integrating them with education systems to transform a society."

Nicholas Negroponte, Founder and Chairman of the group, said that he hoped that industry would now copy the design for the XO-3.

Michael Schumacher back to F1 (Formula 1)

Hamburg: Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher is to come out of retirement to race for Mercedes GP, the Formula One team confirmed Wednesday. Schumacher, who had quit the sport in 2006, will make his debut with the new team on March 14 at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2010 season.

Schumacher said he had agreed to a three-year deal with the Silver Arrows team alongside Nico Rosberg in an all-German driver line-up and was "totally fired up" for a return to racing. Explaining why he had decided to end a three-year absence from racing, Schumacher said the idea of a German F1 team "extremely tempts me", while working together with team principal Ross Brawn again also played a major role.

"Above all, however, my old hunger for racing is back," he said on his website.

The announcement comes 11 days ahead of Schumacher's 41st birthday Jan 3, making him easily the oldest driver in next year's championship. The signing also came a day after Mercedes GP announced a long-term agreement with Malaysian national oil and gas company Petronas.

Schumacher had planned a comeback with Ferrari in the summer after Felipe Massa was sidelined following a crash, but doctors declared him unfit to race following a motorcycle accident earlier in the year.

He said he was now fully fit and had decided on a return after receiving a call from team principal Ross Brawn at the beginning of November asking him to race again with Mercedes.

"In Abu Dhabi (at the last Grand Prix of 2009), when Ross asked me if I could imagine returning to F1, I felt that I wasn't ready for it. But only two weeks later, when he called me once again, I realized that my old passion was returning," he said.

"Suddenly I was on fire again. For me, the imagination to be back in a F1 car and to compete for the world championships is exciting and extremely inspiring."

Schumacher said until recently he was absolutely sure he had ended his racing career.

"But sometimes things change suddenly and unexpectedly. All of a sudden, the framework conditions aren't the same anymore," he said.

Youngsters keeps some sms's as sweet memories

Bangalore: Many youngsters in the city say that they prefer to store the messages sent by loved ones to preserve the memories and special occasions. These messages then become the source of warmth when they need it the most and that's why they refuse to delete it no matter what happens.

"I have saved a message that was sent three years ago. That was when my mom got her first mobile phone and had just learnt to send SMSes. She sent me one saying she loves me," says Shwetha N, an arts graduate to Deccan Chronicle.

Many people like to store the funny forwarded messages but there are others who only keep personal messages on the phone. "There's no place for forwards on my phone. I usually save "I'm sorry" messages whether they are from a love interest or a friend. I go through them in future, when I'm missing the person," says dancer Parabjeet Singh. The oldest message on his phone is one from 2006. "It is about a blooper that an ex-colleague made. It reads 'Check this out. Preeti said to the boss today: Can you please hold the line? I'm on another call'," he laughs.

There are also few people who prefer to save nasty messages sent by friend during fight. "I make sure to save the nasty ones too as they remind me of the negative side of the person. I refer to the messages later if I need to remind the person of the hurtful things he or she had said to me. I have messages from three to four years ago," says Purvi S, a business consultant.

It has happened many times with all of us that somehow we have managed to delete all our messages from the phone by mistake. To avoid it, youngsters in the city advise to always save a backup. Especially with mobile phone suite software, synchronizing your SMSes have become easier. "At times, I absent-mindedly remove my SIM card and end up losing the SMSes. Once my corrupt memory card was to blame. The sense of loss is immense when that happens," says Shwetha. "Also ensure that you don't lose your phone and no stranger has access to it. Just imagine, one look at the messages and he or she will have a glimpse into your life history," warns Purvi.

3 Idiots Movie review and Rating (hindi movie)

Film: "3 Idiots";
Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani;
Director: Rajkumar Hirani;

Rating: 4/4 (Super hit movie)

By now, Aamir Khan has hit so many sixers in his career that we can only wonder what this maestro of marketing intends to do next. For sure, "3 Idiots" is yet another vehicle to showcase Aamir's sparkling ability to be part of a cinema that creates a colloquial yet classy language of thought provoking punctuation, syntax and exclamation.

Review: "3 Idiots" is first and foremost a tremendously entertaining piece of cinema. The boys-will-have-fun atmosphere on an engineering campus is shot with the devious humour and warmth of a joke that has not lost its punch even after years of re-telling.

Some things never change in a straightjacketed society like ours. And really, when Rajkumar Hirani, with help from his co-writer Abhijat Joshi, sets down to criticise the glaring anomalies in our education system, we are compelled to wonder for a few seconds, if flogging the sacred cows of our institutionalised system of governance in cinema is not just an excuse to pull out all stops and let the young heroes have all the fun that their more disciplined counterparts deny themselves.

The thought processes underlining the film's super-vibrant but calm surface are never allowed to seep out and bubble to the exterior of the narrative. If at heart "3 Idiots" is a serious indictment of our education system, at the surface it's a character-driven film played out at an observant and opulent but always-feisty octave.

The sounds of protest against the curbs, checks and downers in our education reach out to us in a cascade of crisply-written lines spoken by characters who have lived out the nightmare that precedes that long journey into the realisation of our dreams.

At times, the narrative is savagely funny. Note the sequence where Rancho (Aamir Khan) and his girl take the critically ill old man to the hospital on a scooter. Hirani has always seen humour of mortality. He has a potent style of storytelling, a mix of street wisdom and cinematic sensitivities that come together in a noiseless tango of social comment and entertainment.

The director is strangely shy of displaying emotions. So he counters the melodrama of his third hero Raju Rastongi (Sharma Joshi)'s life with black-and-white 1960s' self-mocking background music.

Ironically, Hirani's unconventional hero Rancho often goes the other way and sheds manly tears for colleagues, friends and tormented young citizens of modern India who are crippled by a despotic disregard for their natural creativity.

Aamir undertakes his character's journey through the paradoxical labyrinth of an ambition-driven education system -- incidentally the loopholes in our education was also the theme of Aamir's "Taare Zameen Par" and Hirani's "Munnabhai M.B.B.S." -- with a gut-level understanding of what pains today's average 20-something.

Aamir's transformation into a 22-year-old collegian is so complete you end up wondering if he has been lying about being 40-plus in real life! Like most Aamir starrers, "3 Idiots" too is predominantly his vehicle. Most of the funniest lines and inspiring situations in the script come from Aamir. And boy, does he play the boy-man with restrained relish!

Sharman as the poor middle-class boy driven to near-suicide by his parents' ambitions gets two meaty sequences. He chews on them with careful sensitivity, leaving a lasting impression. Madhavan as the third 'idiot' expresses his smothered dreams through a series of half-expressed thoughts and a fear of unhappiness that reach his eyes without transit.

Kareena as the girl engaged to the tycoon with a penchant for putting a price tag on all his gifts, brings a dollop of sunshine and feminine grace to an otherwise masculine tale. She is so spunky and spontaneous you wish there was room for more of her. There's even less of Mona Singh who's again a spirited free soul.

The two ladies are, fortunately, part of the climax where our three heroes deliver Kareena's sister (Mona Singh)'s baby on the office table - a clear indication that even an all-boys tale has no qualms about embracing maternal responsibilities if the situation arises.

But did "3 Idiots" really need a manufactured child-delivered-in-crisis climax? Did it need those endless toilet-and-bum jokes? Couldn't Boman Irani and the new actor Omi Vaidya have been delineated less hammily?

It's not that "3 Idiots" is a flawless work of art. But it is a vital, inspiring and life-revising work of contemporary art with some heart imbued into every part.

In a country where students are driven to suicide by their impossible curriculum, "3 Idiots" provides hope. Maybe cinema can't save lives. But cinema sure can make you feel life is worth living. "3 Idiots" does just that, and much more.
